Mumbai: A 30-year-old diploma student from Kerala who indicated on Twitter that he intended to end his life was rescued from a hotel in Dadar in Mumbai by cyber police on Saturday, an official said. The Central Region cyber police station was tipped off about the situation, of a depressed man tweeting about his intention to commit suicide, by a journalist through Whatsapp on Saturday morning, he said. “After information was received, we began a hunt for the man and soon his location was traced to a posh hotel in Dadar. A team led by Inspector Sanjay Govilkar and the hotel manager opened the room with a duplicate key. They found the man in the room with a knife. He was depressed as his girlfriend had decided not to marry him,” he said. The man, who had checked into the hotel on Friday night, was sent to a hospital where he was given expert counseling, the official added. New Delhi: A study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has claimed that districts that were severely affected by the second wave of COVID-19 may not witness equally intense third wave. Experts from the apex medical body asked states to conduct district-level heterogeneity assessments — that include studying variations in spread and population, to plan health measures based on local data. “Talking about a third wave across the entire state may not be helpful as all districts didn’t experience the second wave uniformly. Thiruvananthapuram: Covid-19 cases in Kerala have been on the upward trend as the state recorded over 20,000 fresh infections for the fifth consecutive day on Saturday. However, the state saw a decline in fatalities, and also a fall in the Test Positivity Rate to 12.31 per cent. Meanwhile, Kerala Health Minister Veena George asked people to follow Covid-19 protocol and be extra cautious as she warned them that the state was not yet free from the second wave of Coronavirus. Kerala logged 20,624 fresh cases and 80 deaths in the past 24 hours, pushing the infection caseload to 33,90,761 and the toll to 16,781. The state had recorded 100 deaths on Friday, while the TPR was 13.61 per cent. United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned a Taliban attack on a UN compound in Herat, Afghanistan, which resulted in the killing of an Afghan security guard. As the Taliban engaged in fierce clashes with Afghan security forces in Herat on Friday, the UN’s main compound in the city came under attack by rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire, according to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). “So-called ‘anti-government elements’ targeted entrances of the clearly marked UN facility with rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire just hours after Taliban fighters penetrated Herat city and clashed with Afghan security forces near UNAMA’s provincial headquarters,” the mission added. Delta Variant Produces Similar Viral Loads in Vaccinated, Unvaccinated: CDC Study

Washington: The Delta variant of COVID-19 produces similar amounts of virus in vaccinated and unvaccinated people if they get infected, showed a new study published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday. The CDC study focused on 469 COVID-19 cases identified among Massachusetts residents who had travelled to Barnstable County, a summer vacation destination, during July 3 to 17, the Xinhua news agency reported. A total of 346 cases, about 74 per cent, occurred in fully vaccinated people, according to the study. Testing identified the Delta variant in 90 per cent of specimens from 133 patients. Cycle threshold values were similar among specimens from patients who were fully vaccinated and those who were not, according to the study. Lima: A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 6.1 on the Richter Scale shook the north Pacific coast of Peru on Friday, sending people fleeing their homes, damaging a centuries old church and injuring at least one person. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 12:10 pm local time, with an epicenter about 8 kilometers east of the city of Sullana. Tremors were also felt in southern Ecuador. The earthquake caused many citizens of Sullana to leave their homes. A woman was injured after being trapped under a collapsed wall while a car was crushed by bricks.
