Delta And Kappa: WHO Labels Coronavirus Strains Detected in India

New Delhi: The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday announced that B.1.617.2 and B.1.617.1 variants of coronavirus, which was first detected in India will be referred to as the ‘Delta  And Kappa’ respectively. ‘Today, @WHO announces new, easy-to-say labels for #SARSCoV2 Variants of Concern (VOCs) & Interest (VOIs). They will not replace existing scientific names, but are aimed to help in public discussion of VOI/VOC,’ Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical Covid-19 lead, tweeted on Monday. An expert group convened by WHO has recommended labeling using letters of the Greek Alphabet, i.e., Alpha, Beta, Gamma, which will be easier and more practical to discuss by non-scientific audiences, the UN health agency said in a statement. ‘The established nomenclature systems for naming and tracking SARS-CoV-2 genetic lineages by GISAID, Nextstrain and Pango are currently and will remain in use by scientists and in scientific research,” it stated. Coronavirus May Not be Long-Term if Vaccinated. Here’s Why

New Delhi: At least two new studies around Sars-2 or coronavirus infection and vaccinations have emerged that show people vaccinated against the viral disease may have lifelong immunity. Although that does not make them immune to re-infection, it offers hope for the human body to develop enough antibodies that can fight COVID-19 in the long term. Both, scientists and the public, have had fears over the past year that COVID-19 may never go away from our lives and that repeated vaccination – once every six months or annually – may be needed to keep the infection away. The studies published (click here or here ) indicated that Sars-CoV-2 infection, responsible for the ongoing pandemic that has grappled the entire world with personal difficulties and losses, may not be as long-lived in its worst form, as feared by the public. Scientists found that immunity against the gruesome virus lasted for at least a year, and may even last for decades in some people. Researchers in both these stu

New Delhi: Union Minister Hardeep Puri said today that a false narrative is being circulated over the Central Vista project. Puri also said that no design had been cleared for a new Prime Minister’s residence and only two projects – the Parliament building and the widening of the central vista stretch – were underway. The “Centra Vista” and “Centra Vista Avenue” were being freely interchanged, the union minister said. He also said the decision to construct a new Parliament building was taken in 2012, when the Congress was in power. The Parliament building is being constructed at an estimated cost of ₹ 862 crores and the Central Vista Avenue at ₹ 477 crores. “The total cost of the project construction currently underway is around 1300 odd crores… We want to finish the new Parliament building by 2022 to mark 75 years of independence,” Puri told report

China Announces Three-Child Policy, Eases Birth Limit For Married Couples

Beijing: China’s ruling Communist Party has decided to ease the birth limit and allow married couples to have up to three children, a major policy shift in response to the Asian nation’s ageing population, a state news agency said Monday. China, which was largely criticised for its one-child policy, had revised the decision in October 2015, allowing couples to have up to two children. The announcement follows recent census data that showed a dramatic shrinkage in China’s working-age population over the past decade while the number of people older than 65 increased, adding to the strain on the economy and society. A meeting of the Communist Party’s Politburo Monday decided that China will introduce major policies and measures to actively deal with the ageing population, the Xinhua News Agency said. Party leaders pointed out that further optimizing the fertility policy, implementing the policy of one couple can have three children and supporting measures are conducive to improving Chi
